Details, Itinerary
On this tour we discover the most beautiful towns in the north of Gran Canaria.
Through the small towns we gain insight into the culture, history, architecture of the island as well as the lifestyle and customs of the Canarian population. Our route takes us through one of the most beautiful green landscapes on the island, so you can also get to know part of the island’s wonderfully green mountain landscapes.
➣ During the tour we invite you to a cozy alfresco picnic where you can taste some of the products of Canarian gastronomy. (This is not a main meal, we have selected picnic treats and snacks in the basket, which are often found on the table of the locals.)
On this day you can expect mostly simple urban walks, in some places with a few steps.
On cloudy days in the winter months (December-March), we recommend wearing warm clothing (long pants, sweaters), as the air temperature at an altitude above 600 meters can be around 10 degrees.
The tour begins in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria at 09:00. Meeting point is at the port exit (about 2 minutes walk from the gangway of your cruise ship, see the “where we’ll meet” picture below). We’ll wait for you at the stated time.
The first town on our excursion is the third populous town on the island, Arucas.
The symbol of the town, the imposing neo-Gothic church of San Juan Bautista, rises almost like a fortress over the old town. It is also often referred to as the Cathedral of Arucas, although this church is not a cathedral. But then why is it called that? This and other details will be revealed on our tour. The old town itself is not that big, yet there are many interesting things to explore here. The neoclassical streets, the atmosphere of an old traditional canary house, a beautiful park with various native and interesting flowers and plants. Finally a brief walk in the past with a collection of vintage photographs that show how the town was about 100 years ago.
After Arucas we continue our route into the interior of Gran Canaria. A visit to the pretty little town of Firgas. Here we can admire the water cascading down the stairs of the 30 meter long artificial waterfall. Walking through the town center, we discover the ceramic benches whose mosaics represent the 21 municipalities on the island and the relief models of the 8 Canary Islands. From the nearby viewpoint we can observe the northern landscape stretching to the Atlantic Ocean. Firgas is a popular tourist destination mainly because of the waterfall. However, the attentive visitor can discover a few other small interesting details about the culture, history and everyday life of the island. We won't run around the town, but will be attentive visitors 🙂
A winding route takes us through the green mountain landscape to our first viewpoint at an altitude of nearly 1000 meters. Our next stop is a short photo break. From there we have a great view over the valley towards the capital and we can also observe the important role agriculture plays in the life of the people in the northern part of the island.
Lasting experiences are found in the details. A special coffee drink, perfumes, atmosphere and much more awaits you.
According to legend, a vision of the Virgin Mary appeared on a pine tree in a mountain village in 1481. (Hence the name of the island's patron saint, Nuestra Señora del Pino - “Our Lady of the Pine.”). Then over the years more and more pilgrims began to arrive in this small town. The inhabitants first built a chapel in honor of Mary, which was later replaced by a church. Finally, a basilica was built in 1767, which we also visit on this excursion.
The town has now become the religious center of Gran Canaria and the basilica is home to the island's patron saint. Here we will also find one of the most beautiful streets in Gran Canaria. The traditional Canarian wooden balconies are particularly impressive. And if you also want to know what purpose these balconies were originally built for and why we never see people on them, then this location will be the best place to get the answer. A short walk through the romantic streets with their post-colonial architecture will surely help you to experience the peaceful and stress-free life of the Canarian people and to feel the serenity of the authentic Canarian atmosphere.
After our delicious Canarian picnic we head back to the capital.
To conclude our tour we’ll stop in the capital at a viewpoint, overlooking Las Palmas where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the harbor and your cruise ship.
– Plus many more great views and landmarks along the way..
– A short drive back to the harbor, where the tour concludes at 14:30.
